Blanchard Rebuild Procedure

Here is a shot of  the major components of two No. 11 Blanchard rotary grinders which were basket cases. Our job was to rebuild them to new specifications.

Another picture of parts to the same machines. The parts were literally shipped to us in boxes.

Here the gearboxes and motors are being disassembled.

To the left you  see the set-up for grinding the ways of the base of the machine. By grinding the ways in one set-up we achieve the utmost in parallelism between the two surfaces. This assures our customers the ultimate in accuracy and makes it easier for us to scrape the saddle to mate with the base.
To the left you see a saddle being mated to a Blanchard No. 18 base which was ground on our larger way grinder. After the base was ground it was leveled and a thin coating of Prussian blue was spread on its ways. The saddle was then lowered onto the base and slid back and forth transferring the blue onto the contacting areas of the bottom of the saddle. These high spots are then scraped away and the procedure is repeated many times until the saddle mates perfectly with the base.
Likewise, the column was ground on our way grinder. It is laid on its back and prepared with Prussian blue as above. The spindle head is then rigged to an overhead crane and the above procedure is duplicated. The spindle has new bearings in it at this point and the scraping is conducted in such a manner that the axis of the spindle will be parallel with the vertical ways in both the horizontal and vertical planes.

To the left you see the saddle of  one of the No. 11 Blanchards being assembled in preparation for mounting on the base.

To the right the saddle is mounted on the base and the spindle head is in position on the column.

Here is a view of the two No. 11 Blanchard's as they are being assembled.

The completed machines are pictured here prior to run-off by the customer.

To the left is another picture of the completed machines. Please note that all the sheetmetal work including the coolant tanks was fabricated in our own shop.

To the right please note the sheetmetal way covers we designed and fabricated to keep coolant and grinding dust off the upper vertical ways. Likewise, we have installed bellows way covers on the lower vertical ways behind the metal guarding to provide the same function as above.

To the right the same No. 18 Blanchard with column, electrical box and saddle.

To the left is the same machine with spindle housing installed.

To the right can be seen the same machine from the operators side.
